Planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New Zealand or Australia is exciting, but it can also raise plenty of questions. Should you hire a car and explore independently? Is a guided tour the right fit? How active will it be? Is it better to visit one country or both?

These are some of the most common questions we hear from travellers. Here are a few thoughts that may help as you plan your journey.

Independent travel or a guided tour?

There is no right or wrong answer. Many people enjoy the freedom of a self-drive holiday, setting their own pace and choosing where to stop along the way.

A guided tour offers a different kind of freedom. Instead of planning routes, booking accommodation, navigating unfamiliar roads and coordinating activities, you can simply enjoy the experience. We take care of the logistics while you focus on discovering the places you’ve travelled so far to see.

For many of our travellers, that means arriving home with memories rather than an inbox full of reservations and booking references.

Small groups make a big difference

The thought of joining a large coach tour can really scare some people (myself included!).

Our groups are intentionally limited to a maximum of 24 travellers. That creates a different atmosphere. You’ll get to know your fellow travellers, have more opportunities to ask questions, and spend less time waiting for large groups to move from place to place.

Many guests tell us that the friendships they make on tour become one of the unexpected highlights of their trip.

What does “fairly active” actually mean?

One of the questions we’re asked most often is whether our tours are suitable for different fitness levels. Rather than using vague descriptions, here’s a better way to think about it.

Most days involve between one and three hours of walking spread throughout the day. You’ll need to be comfortable walking on uneven paths, climbing some stairs, and getting on and off the coach (bus) independently. Some days are busier than others, but there is also free time built into the itinerary to relax or explore at your own pace.

If you’re unsure whether the tour is right for you, just ask. We’re always happy to talk through the itinerary and help you decide.

Seeing the highlights… and much more

When people compare tours, they often focus on famous attractions. Of course, places like Hobbiton, Milford Sound, the Great Barrier Reef and the TranzAlpine train are unforgettable experiences, and we’ve included many of the destinations that first inspire people to visit New Zealand and Australia.

But some of the most memorable moments are the ones people never expected: sharing stories over dinner with new friends, meeting local hosts, discovering a favourite small town, or watching the sun set over a place you’d never heard of before planning your trip.

A great tour is so much more than just ticking famous sights off a list. Creating a journey that feels balanced, relaxed and genuinely memorable is both a science and an art form.

Should you visit both countries in one trip?

Many travellers dream of visiting both Australia and New Zealand while they’re on this side of the world. For some, our combined tour is the perfect solution, allowing you to experience both countries in one extended holiday.

For others, it makes more sense to visit one country now and return for the other another year. There is no wrong choice. Both tours are designed as complete experiences in their own right, and many travellers enjoy having a second adventure to look forward to.

Choosing the tour that’s right for you

The best holiday isn’t necessarily the one that covers the greatest distance or visits the most places. It’s the one that matches your interests, travel style and pace.

If you’re looking for a small group, carefully planned itineraries, knowledgeable guides, and the chance to experience New Zealand and Australia without the stress of organising every detail yourself, we’d love to welcome you on one of our tours.

If you have questions before booking, please get in touch. We’re always happy to help you decide whether one of our tours is the right fit for your travels.
