Mondumo Aotearoa New Zealand in 14 Days

Day 8: Milford Sound Flight
On Day 8, we visit Milford Sound, which is a stunning but long day trip from Queenstown.
By road, the roundtrip takes around 13 hours in total,.
If you fly back it reduces the day to around 9 hours.
We will depart from Queenstown around 7am, making several short stops along the 190 mile (290 km) scenic and sometimes winding journey, to arrive at Milford Sound by 12.30pm. At Milford Sound, we take a 2 hour nature cruise on the fiord.
As there’s only one road in and out, the bus returns on the same 190 miles road, arriving back in Queenstown around 8pm.
To make the day shorter, many people choose to fly back from Milford Sound on a fixed-wing plane. This has the added benefit of enjoying the stunning views of Fiordland’s lakes, valleys, mountains, forests and glaciers from the air! The flight time is approximately 40 minutes.
Our preferred operator for these flights is Air Milford, although this may vary depending on availability.
If you choose to fly, we’ll drop you off at Milford Sound airport after the cruise, you’ll land back at Queenstown airport around 4pm, and the flight company will transport you from Queenstown airport to the hotel.
Expect to pay around NZ$565 to NZ$624 for this flight (approx. US$360). The upper estimate includes a NZ$59 fuel surcharge, which may be removed before your tour.
Please note:
- Fights are weather-dependent and booking now doesn’t guarantee the flight will operate if there’s low cloud or other weather concerns.
- Pre-booking is a request, not a guarantee of availability.
- The flight company requires passenger weights for safety and balance.
- You will make payment directly to the flight company upon landing.
